We are all aware that we need credible and authoritative data to support library decision- making. COUNTER usage data is an important tool in a library’s data warehouse, not only in calculating cost-per-use and informing cancellation and acquisition decisions. Usage data can also support the value of the library’s investment in content, and it can be used as evidence in publisher negotiations.
In this round table, our expert panel will discuss how they have used COUNTER usage data and their successes. They will also consider what next steps COUNTER should take and how the library community can support them. For example, by calling for greater publisher compliance with the standard, improved interoperability with library management systems, or additional metrics for the monitoring of transformative agreements.
The panel will be chaired by Anne C. Osterman, Director of the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), the consortium of the 71 non-profit college and university libraries within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Anne has a Master’s in Library Science as well as a Master’s in Statistics. Anne will become Chair of the COUNTER Board of Directors in May this year.
